Isuzu, the up-and-coming Japanese auto and truck manufacturer, will soon have to learn the ways of Southern hospitality — in the business world.
Associated Press reports, via Japanese media outlets, that Isuzu has purchased land in Birmingham, Ala., and will begin assembling midsize vehicles in the United States by the end of the decade.
Isuzu truck sales in the United States increased by about 10 percent in 2006 to approximately 27,000 vehicles. Nearly all of the current manufacturer's vehicles sold in the U.S. are imported from Japan.![]()
Isuzu has a current agreement with General Motors to produce a limited amount of trucks in GM's plant in Janesville, Wis.
But the new factory, scheduled to be built on land Isuzu purchased for $7.8 million, will be a full production plant and will begin operations in 2009 or 2010.
