The Towe Auto Museum in Sacramento is now accepting entries for its fourth annual Automotive Poetry Contest.
Conceived in 2002 by poet and museum docent Elsie Whitlow Feliz, the idea was created via the the popularity of the famous cowboy poets contest.
"What we found out is that there are poets who don't much about cars and car enthusiasts who don't know much about poetry, but we've gotten some great poems," said Don Feliz, the husband of Elsie Whitlow Feliz who's also a museum docent.
The museum is seeking poems "related in some way to the automobile, a favorite car, a first car, something about a family car or a motorcycle or a truck," said Feliz. "We've had people from Canada and Illinois," said Feliz.
The contest began in 2004 and about 60 poets entered. The contest has stayed about the same size throught its past two years.
Entry fee is $10 for up to three poems of no more than 40 lines. Three typed copies of each poem must be submitted. Previously published poems are acceptable if the author owns the rights to the poem.
Deadline for entry is Nov. 10 with first, second and third-place prizes of $200, $100 and $50. Winners also receive a one-year museum membership.
Winning entries will be posted on the Towe web site by Feb. 1, 2008.
