It's been 10 months since the Environmental Protection Agency released its list of the most fuel-efficienct cars of the year.![]()
But with the recentl release by J.D. Power & Associates listing 2007 to date sales of hybrid cars, led by the Toyota Prius, here's the list again of the most fuel-efficient cars of 2007 — from best average mph to lowest. The mph designations are city/highway MPG averages.
The vehicles listed with with asterisks are cars I reviewed during year, so I've provided a corresponding comment.
1. Toyota Prius (60 city/51 highway).
* 2. Honda Civic Hybrid (49/51) — A wonderfully efficient vehicle. It has no weaknesses, it's refined for the category and, of course, has the Honda name.
3. Toyota Camry Hybrid (40/38).
*4. Ford Escape Hybrid (31/29 — Nicely appointment and easy to like, but sluggish on hills.
5. Toyota Yaris (34/40).
6. Toyota Yaris (34/39).
* 7. Honda Fit (33/38), manual transmission. Perhaps today's the best car for the money. It's a $15,000 vehicle, but its offer more than some cars double the price.
8. Toyota Corolla (32/41).
*9. Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio (32/35) — Great little cars for the money, but both lacksthe refinement ofothers in their class and that bodes well for others in the same class.
* 10. Mercury Mariner Hybrid/Ford Escape Hybrid (32/29) — Like the nearly identical sibling, the Mariner has a lot going for it, with the exception of adequate acceleration on hills.
