Nearly 30 million morists took to the road last years on Labor Day weekend, according to AAA. And it's a good bet the number will increase this year.
With traffic jams and bad drivers in mind, Ezra Dyer, columnist for Automobile Magazine and a contributor to Esquire and The New York Times, has some advice to help ease the burden of holiday driving madness.
Here are Dyer's five quick tips to help ease the "pain" — whether it's on Labor Day weekend or not.
* Maintain Tire Pressure: Keeping air in tires can have a fuel economy benefit of up to 10 cents per gallon, not to mention it’s safer and tires last much longer.
* Avoid Aggressive Driving: In stop-and-go traffic, instead of speeding up and slowing down, hang back and try to maintain a constant speed. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by up to 33% at highway speeds and up to 5% in the city.
* Change Air Filters: Dead bugs, leaves and grime can reduce your gas mileage by 10 pecent, which can add up to more than 30 cents a gallon.
* Reduce Excess Weight: While the percent of fuel efficiency depends on many variables, the less weight your car carries, the better mileage you get.
* Get Some Exercise: Take advantage of situations where you can walk instead of drive. Your fuel savings wil increase 100 percent.
