American Nicky Hayden, the reigning world titlist, will attempt continue his strong recent performances and young Australian Casey Stoner will look to extend his season-long domination on the 11th stop on the 18-race circuit.
Practice will be held Friday, with qualifying Saturday and the final Sunday on the famous racetrack that's celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Although a second U.S. race has been approved for Indianapolis, Indiana, for 2008 the third-year race in Monterey is the only race of its kind in the United States.
Despite his world titlist designation Hayden, 25, is only ninth in the series standings with 73 points. He qualified sixth last year at the Laguna Seca event, but moved into the lead about after halfway through the final and was never challenged.
Stoner, 21, who finished fifth in the circuit's last weekend in Sachsenring, Germany, has won five of his circuit's 10 races this season and has not finished lower than fifth. He'll be favored again this week against a strong American contingent and will also attempt to redeem a disappointing result last year in the United States when he withdrew after a crash.
